CATCH BASIN MAINTENANCE
BEST PRACTICES
INSPECT OFTEN
Sweep any leaves, garbage, or debris away from the grate
Check sediment levels and look for any signs of contamination or blockages
CLEAN ANNUALLY
It is the responsibility of the property owner to clean any catch basins that are on their property. Catch basins that are not fully functioning, due to being full, can lead to flooding and damage to nearby buildings as well as possible contamination of the storm systems
Typically, you should have your catch basins professionally cleaned annually. We find as long as you clean them annually, you don’t need to worry about scheduling the cleaning during a certain time of the year and that they stay functioning all year.
BE PREPARED FOR A SPILL
Hazardous liquids such as oil or antifreeze need to be cleaned up immediately - spill kits should be kept on-hand in case of emergency
Owners can purchase a spill kit locally from places like Gregg’s Distributers, KMS Tools, or Lordco
OUR SERVICE
BEFORE THE WORK
We will walk the property to assess the access to the catch basins and identify any challenges that may be present, such as parked cars (this is free of charge). We will discuss with you, either via phone or email, all details of the job and provide you with an estimate valid for 12 months. (Request an estimate by clicking here)
All information will be kept on file and anytime you require an updated estimate, just send us an email or text
Upon approval by the owner or strata council we will add you to our catch basin maintenance list.
THE WORK
If necessary and prior to the work, we will give you notice of when we will be on site, so that residents/tenants/etc can be made aware
Our Hydrovac Operator will arrive and position the Hydrovac Truck to best access the catch basin.
A brief visual inspection is conducted to ensure that the pre-clean levels are acceptable and that there are no issues that need to be addressed (contamination, roots growing, kids toys being shoved in, etc).
The grate will be removed and the boom (the vacuum part) will be positioned to begin to collect debris from inside the catch basin. Our Operator will then use the washing gun to clean the grate, the grate frame, then top-to-bottom the walls of the basin. Meanwhile, the boom will continue to vacuum up the debris. If the debris levels were above the outflow (which would be seen in the pre-clean inspection) then the Operator will use our hose with flushing nozzle attachment to safely flush debris from the outlet pipe back into the basin and collect with the rest of the debris. After being cleaned thoroughly and visually inspected from above, the grate is reinstalled.
After cleaning of all catch basins on site, we will offload the debris at one of our partner locations. If there are any signs of waste contamination, the debris will be offloaded at the appropriate facility and surcharges will apply.
BENEFITS OF REGULAR MAINTENANCE
Reduces chances of pollutants entering stormwater system
Protects nearby buildings from flooding
Prevents unsafe conditions for drivers and pedestrians
FUNCTION OF A CATCH BASIN
Water (rain, lawn watering, car washing, etc) is collected and directed away from areas like roadways, sidewalks, buildings, etc. and towards our City storm system
Sediment, leaves, etc (that make their way past the grate) settle to the bottom of the basin and stay out of the way of the outlet pipe, so it can continue to due its job (this is what needs to be cleaned regularly to keep the CB functioning)
