Catch Basin Maintenance

Best Practices

INSPECT OFTEN

  • Sweep any leaves, garbage, or debris away from the grate

  • Check sediment levels and look for any signs of contamination or blockages

CLEAN ANNUALLY

  • It is the responsibility of the property owner to clean any catch basins that are on their property.  Catch basins that are not fully functioning, due to being full, can lead to flooding and damage to nearby buildings as well as possible contamination of the storm systems

  • Typically, you should have your catch basins professionally cleaned annually.  We find as long as you clean them annually, you don’t need to worry about scheduling the cleaning during a certain time of the year and that they stay functioning all year.

BE PREPARED FOR A SPILL

  • Hazardous liquids such as oil or antifreeze need to be cleaned up immediately - spill kits should be kept on-hand in case of emergency

  • Owners can purchase a spill kit locally from places like Gregg’s Distributers, KMS Tools, or Lordco

BENEFITS OF REGULAR MAINTENANCE

  • Reduces chances of pollutants entering stormwater system

  • Protects nearby buildings from flooding

  • Prevents unsafe conditions for drivers and pedestrians
